Inconsistency In Refereeing

February 16, 2011

I don’t know much about how referees are taught their trade but I do know that they supposedly all go by the same set of rules so it makes me wonder why there is such a difference in refereeing standards from one match to the next.

Take that Flamini challenge yesterday in the AC Milan v Spuds game.  I’m no ref but I know a two footed tackle with both feet off the ground is a red card, no question, yet he was just cautioned with a yellow.  What the fuck ref ?

I had the misfortune to be watching and betting on the Velez Sarsfield match later in the day and 12 minutes into the first half a flailing arm from one of the Caracas players caught a chasing Velez player somewhere around the throat region.  Velez guy goes down as if shot and the result is an instant red for the Caracas guy.  Different scenario I know but a straight red ? I think not.

Every day we see play constantly stop for minor petty infringements because the ref is over officiating and then that will be tempered with a match where the ref will keep play going at all costs.

The whole point of this little piece is that ultimately if you bet money on football your dough is literally in the hands of the ref.  I lost out yesterday after Milan’s goal was disallowed following a shove in the back.  Christ the 18 yard box is like a fucking mosh pit most of the time and if you really look at every incident that is taking place as a corner or cross or free kick comes in you could stop play every time but refs see what they want to see and act as they see fit.  Of course there are times when the ref’s decision will be in your favour, for example there are so many dodgy penalties awarded in South American football, and many a time I have been saved when this has been the case and a goal is the result.

Anyway, that’s my whinge over with.  Bring on the video referee is what I say – at least the playing field will be a bit more level where dubious decisions are concerned.

Moving on, I am pleased to report that the horse I have been waiting for, Masthead, won it’s race early this morning in Australia.  I listened to the commentary and once the jockey took the brakes off it was game over.  That result literally saved the day for me after a day of giving money away on the football so I’m back above £300 again and hoping for a better day today.

Just going back to football for a moment has anyone ever wondered why Betfair offer so many shite games in their daily in play markets ?  Who in their right mind would want to get involved in women’s football, youth games, and reserve games ?  If they must offer these games then put them in the coupons where betting is suspended at kick off ffs.

OK, now I’m definitely finished ranting until possibly later on in the day if I lose money due to inept play, crappy refs, non trying, or whatever.  Looking ahead to the Arsenal Barca game I hope it’s an open game rather than the cagey ‘let’s not lose’ approach that seems to be the norm in this competition.  If Barca turn up and opt to play for the win then they’ll destroy Arsenal in my opinion, 0-3, or 1-3.  Whatever the outcome, as long as both sides try, I’m sure it’ll be entertaining.

Right, I’m off for a bit, but will return later on.

UPDATE>>>>>>>>>  The Arsenal match surprised me I have to say.  They were taught how football is played in the first half and the game could have been over and done with if Messi hadn’t missed that little chip early on.  However the Arse battled really well in the second half and to their credit ran out worthy winners in the end.  I still think they lose in the return leg but we’ll have to wait and see.

Between that game, the Roma game,  and a nondescript Copa Lib game I managed to add a few quid to the account then I went and got involved in that game between Jaguares and Jorge Wilstermann.  Jags were 1/5 at ko and while they demonstrated they were the superior side in the first half their typically Mexican style of play saw to it that half time finished 0-0.  I was really seething watching this game as so many good chances were buggered up, so much so I was crying ‘fix’ to anyone who was within earshot (which would have been one of my dogs as I was alone in the house at the time).

The second half wasn’t much different and I had a fair amount of money either already lost (in the first half) or about to be lost in the second half.  I pressed on as I was sure there would be a result here that I could find to save my arse and backed Over 1.5 goals with about 20 minutes to go as Jags were actually trying a bit harder.  No sooner had I been matched than the first goal (lucky goal at that) went in.  I traded out of Overs for my stake plus a few extra pennies then I layed the 1-0 which also worked out as Jags finished the tie with another goal which actually looked offside  but what the hell.  So that whole 90 minutes plus interval was for a loss of 2 quid or thereabouts – it could have been so much more but for a bit of luck.

I finished off the night with a couple of picks on the Aussie racing, the first of which bolted in at a nice price, so my account balance creeps ever closer to a point where I can take some out.  There are two horses that I may potentially back, again in Australia, that run in the wee small hours of Friday morning (UK time), though I’m not yet privy to their names.  That’s it for now, spreadsheet etc below.

(un)Happy Valentines Day

February 14, 2011

What a crappy day.  Back to back 0-0’s have crippled my account just about and I’m currently about to go even further behind as yet another 0-0 looks to be on the cards.

I wasn’t doing too badly towards the tail and of last week then Saturday came and the Blackburn match (another 0-0) took away a fair percentage of my bank.  Sunday was a good day where I didn’t do too much wrong and managed to get back to some semblance of normality and push my balance back over the £200 mark.  Then came today.  I almost got out of jail in the Fulham v Chelsea match (another 0-0) when a last minute penalty for Fulham looked like saving the day but it was too good to be true.  A truly lousy penalty by Clint Dempsey saw any chance of loss recovery blown out of the water and to add insult to injury instead of leaving Eider Gudjohnsen to tap the rebound in he attempted a Rooney overhead kick which failed spectacularly.  All in all a miserable end to what was a miserable match.

I’m currently waiting on goals in what is arguably the shittiest league in world football.  I am of course referring to the crap served up in the Argie Primera and todays football masterclass is between Lanus and Arsenal.  My correct score bet of 2-1 for trading purposes looks doomed though it is only half time but the score is (you guessed it) currently 0-0.

Moving on from these sorry tales I have to report an impending horsey bet that runs at Mornington in Australia.  The selection’s name is Masthead and it runs in the 6th race which I believe is the 3.45 am (UK time) race on Wednesday morning.  As those who read my stuff know I keep a close watch on the Aussie Betfair forum and this is the horse that I am most interested in backing next.

That’s it for now.  I have to get ready to take Mrs Swearbox out to dinner this evening as you do on V Day.  No doubt the Argie match will just kick into life as I’m going out the door and my chances of trading out of my position will be lost.  Back later.

UPDATE>>>>>>>>>  It appears that the Argie match played out the way most of them go with no goals in the first half then a goal frenzy in the last few minutes of the game.  The final score was 3-1 to Lanus and thankfully I was still around to take advantage as the scores changed.  I layed the 1-0 scoreline and when it went 2-1 I also layed that scoreline to ensure that I took something reasonable away from the match regardless of whether the score remained at 2-1 or didn’t.  It was a wise move as the homeside scored yet again to finish the match 3-1 to the good.  There is a thread on Betfair showing the amount of money wagered on under 3.5 goals – over £40k traded at 1.01…ouch !

That match pretty much rescued the day for me as it left me in profit on the day as opposed to what could have been a fairly significant loss so I’m thankful for that.  Looking forward to tomorrow, particularly the race in the early hours.  Here’s the spreadsheet for the past couple of days.

Betfair Hates Me

February 11, 2011

We all know about the recent site issues that have enraged punters so much so that Betfair organised an online chat session yesterday to address some of the many grievances their customers had with reference to site performance.  I actually emailed them myself regarding the amount of memory that iexplore gobbles up the longer you remain logged in to their site…yesterday taskmanager showed over 750,000K allocated to the one iexplore process that Betfair was running in.  But I’m in danger of going slightly off topic here…the title of the post says Betfair hates me, though I’m sure they hate others in Canada too.

I was online yesterday and the last bet I placed was on an Aussie race that occurred at 20 minutes to midnight my time, which is 5 hours behind UK time.  The horse lost so I called it a night.  I got up this morning and refreshed the Aussie forum to see how things had gone after I had left.  The forum refreshed OK, I read the posts then I popped into the Footy forum.  I then attempted to navigate on the main site from the horse racing page to Friday’s in play football.  No dice.  The page wouldn’t load so I basically shut everything down, cleared out the cache and attempted to log back in.  No dice.

Apparently Betfair have done a series of tests earlier today to ensure their site issue gremlins have disappeared for good.  They report that all went well.  I beg to differ Betfair – all is not well as I now cannot login.

I have spoken to their helpdesk and gone through a bunch of things to try and get logged in but nothing works.  I even tried from another pc just to rule my own out as the fly in the ointment and still no joy.  The helpdesk guy said he wasn’t aware of any other issues but I’ll bet he is by the end of the day.  I just can’t have it that I’m alone in this – there must be others here in Canada who are affected because as I have already stated I had no issues yesterday and the only thing that has happened between 20 minutes to midnight last night and 9 am this morning is a series of Betfair ‘tests’.

If anyone reading this happens to be in my neck of the woods would you be so kind as to try logging out then logging back in again and report back.  Thanks in advance.  I will post back later on with an update.

UPDATE>>>>>>>>>  Well it’s more than 6 hours since I spoke with Betfair and I still can’t login though I did try a little test of my own just for shits and giggles.  I got my brother to try and log into my account and he lives in the UK – result = success.  So there isn’t an account issue, there must be some screw up in some piece of code that basically treats my login attempt from my own pc as invisible.  It doesn’t even moan when I try to login with an incorrect password.  Anyway I’ve emailed Betfair with this new snippet of info in the hope that it will find it’s way to the right guy who knows how to fix it.

Moving on to betting activities I’ve had a few bets over the past couple of days though the net result has been less than pleasing.  My account balance soared past the £300 mark briefly then after a series of no hoper horses it tumbled back down below £250 and there it rests until this account problem gets fixed.  More later on, including my spreadsheet as I know you all love it.

UPDATE>>>>>>>>>   Well as of 8.23 pm my time it appears I can now log in again though my account balance won’t load properly but hey it’s a start.  Not sure if I’m going to bother with anything this evening or not as I’ve only just discovered I can get back in.  Gonna do a bit of a trawl through the forums then decide what to do.

UPDATE>>>>>>>>>  Since I last posted I had just the one bet which was successful – a lay of the 0-0 half time score in the Necaxa v CF America match.  Spreadsheet etc below (only one p&l to cover several days).

Looking forward to the Manchester derby tomorrow and hoping that Utd can do the business but City are playing well at the moment so potentially a gripping game awaits us.  Back tomorrow.

I’m Back On The Horse

February 8, 2011

Well it’s been a while since I last posted after having gone down with pneumonia but I’m pleased to say I’m pretty much back to my old self again.

I’ve had a few bets since the last blog post though my account keeps yo-yoing up and down to the point it’s pissing me right off.  Anyway, I’m having a bet on a horse later on and it better win as I’m in danger of having a strike rate that is worse than some of the imbeciles that post ten times a day on the Betfair horsey forum.

The nag runs in the 5th race at Sandown in Australia (BPrk on Betfair) at 03.10 am UK time.  It’s name is Atomic and is trading a shade under 2/1 as I type.  The folk in the know reckon it’s a hotpot so I’m following their lead – just hope it does the business.

I’ll be back later on with an update and some spreadsheet screenshots to bring everything up to date.

UPDATE>>>>>>>>>  At last, a winner, thanks to SOTM on the Aussie horsey forum.  Backed the horse pre race at 3.25 and put up a lay of twice my stake at 1.2 at the off.  I listened to commentary on the Aus racing radio and the race caller made a right balls up at the end calling Vatican the winner then realising his mistake reversed the placings.  Vatican ended up trading at 1.01 while the lowest price that I saw matched for Atomic was 1.10.  It wouldn’t have mattered in my case as my lay at 1.2 was matched so I was green either way but I’m happy that Atomic got it’s nose in front where it counted.  Hope some of you followed as the guy that puts these tips up is rarely out of the money from what I’ve seen and read.

I’m posting up all the missing screenshots of the spreadsheet just so things are kosher but I’m not splitting up the daily P&L’s – I’m just putting up one to cover the whole period going back to the 27th Jan when I last posted.
